People in my view like things to kick against - regardless of whether they are rules, guidelines or boundaries. Ceilings both real and perceived will always limit the growth and rise of the company and individuals involved. We can either be a victim of this - or get the dynamite out and blast away any restrictions that prevent us from achieving our dreams. But what are the dreams that make us want to change or break free in the first place?

Many will often prefer to pigeon hole themselves into a category that makes sense, gives them sense of order, makes them feel like they belong to something tangible and real. Do people prefer to be safely contained even though they have not revealed their true potential?

Head of Nothing - with no boundaries, no restrictions could perhaps be likened to someone who is willing to parachute into a deep ravine or cavern and then risk being lost to the human race by getting stuck, disorientated in the huge underground cave systems that can only be accessed by that initial parachute jump.

There are times when we approach something new - we have to take a leap of faith into the unknown or unknowable. Without constraints also equates to - "anything can happen". You the 'employer' and they the 'head of nothing' both have to take that leap of faith and be willing to commit to a journey which could land you ...............

So may be they weren't ready for that? Or was it you that was not quite prepared to ...........?

Quiet time, contemplative time, time away, time out - all valuable components in utilising time effectively. Time will tell what will grow and what will not. Time away from the focus can bring a new perspective, new inspiration and new energy.

Time not doing is often as valuable as time doing useful things.

Is this a valuable part of the expectations of Head of Nothing?

I see Head of Nothing” was born out of A role without constraints, but that could also be head of something actually?

A role without constraints is a role free of any impendiment, free of strategic plan but good and easy flowing like a writing.

Writing on any subject of choice without fear nor favour just doing it!!

Like Nike just do it? that is something other than nothing absolutely!!!

I know that if I have all the space in the world to park my car - I make a complete mess of it. However, if I am parking in the street and only have six inches in front, and six inches at the back - I can park the car brilliantly. I turn into a car parking genius - the constraints have provided boundaries within which to work.

When commissioning others to work for me I have given them free rein knowing how I have felt when I am trusted to do a good job. However, there is never a situation like this that can be entirely constraint free but we can offer control. My constraints were invariably things like time factors - the project needed to be completed within a certain period of time, as well as fit in with any budget that I wanted to spend. It might also have to fulfil certain needs e.g. for a creative caterer the budget must feed 150 people on a particular date at a specific time. Invariably the end results were incredible - way beyond what I might have been able to conceive myself.

This is an interesting challenge and a concept that I have dealt with before. As an artist and designer I know that if my customer trusts me, my skills and capabilities and I trust that they will like anything that I might create, then the creative process becomes much more liberal, free and free flowing. As such it allows for the serendipitous moments that generate a flash of inspiration inspired by the circumstances, materials, mood, the moment which in turn can give rise to something especially unique for that particular project.
